Excuses
What excuses are you telling yourself, that are diminishing your dreams?
So, I have a penalty flag in my desk, that a good friend gave me. Often, I would share with this individual that I wished I could throw a penalty flag, much like a football referee does in a game. I would argue that some people needed a penalty when they made excuses or minimized their value to our organization. Could you imagine how that would look, anytime someone used an excuse? I know I would put more emphasis on the expectations I have for myself if that were the case. Are your excuses holding you back?
We all have excuses that create roadblocks on our path to achieving goals. We are the worst offenders in perpetuating these lies. The timing isn’t right, someone else is to blame for our failures, and I don’t know where or how to start, are some examples of excuses. Stop already! Seeing past the excuses is hard, without a doubt. Instead, we should see the opportunity to rise and achieve something great. Identifying when we are only seeing excuses and not solutions, is vital in our personal development.
We can choose to make our excuses reality, or we can see them as the lie they are. The only way to combat those excuses is action. Action overcomes any doubt we may have, and by eliminating doubt we have established momentum. Every step forward is a win in achieving those goals and avoiding the excuse trap. Our confidence compounds, leaving us in a better place each day. Overcoming excuses is the act of building something positive. How are you building momentum and a better you?
One necessary thing we must all have in life is a truth teller. This is an important person in our lives who won’t sugar coat anything, and call us out on our excuses. They love us unconditionally, and want nothing but the best for us. However, they will always tell us the truth regardless of how we may feel about it. Who is going to tell you the truth, and hold you accountable to your goals?
What excuses are holding you back from reaching your goals?
Where could you create momentum that will combat your excuses?
Who is the truth telling in your life?
A growth mindset is important to our personal development and achievement. Excuses tend to get in the way. Knowing where we are making excuses allows us the chance to pinpoint specific growth areas of our lives. We can then take action to fix those, and if we’re lucky we have people in our circle of friends who will push us. Thanks for checking in this week, and I hope you work through any excuses you may have. Please leave a comment below that will contribute to this conversation.
