Risky Business

Risk-taking is an inevitable part of life. We make small gambles every day—trying new ideas, testing limits, or making decisions with uncertain outcomes. Yet, when it comes to chasing our biggest dreams, many of us hesitate.

Why is that? Is it the fear of failure or looking foolish? Or are we simply unsure of our direction?

Recently, a friend of mine faced a tough decision: whether to leave a lucrative job—and the financial security that came with it—to pursue a dream he’d been holding onto for years. Given his responsibilities and the potential fallout if things didn’t go as planned, it was a bold move. But he made the leap. I admired his bravery and the confidence it took to choose fulfillment over comfort.

Taking risks is powerful. It’s how we grow, stretch, and discover what we’re truly capable of. But not all risks are created equal—and not all are worth taking. Growth comes from taking the right risks, not just any risks.

The Difference Between Major and Minor Risks

Understanding the difference between a major and a minor risk is essential to your personal and professional development.

  • Minor risks might cause small inconveniences if they don’t work out—like proposing a new idea, trying a different strategy, or shifting how you approach a challenge.

  • Major risks, on the other hand, have the potential to drastically alter your life, career, or relationships.

Trying a new method at work? That’s a minor risk. Hand-feeding an alligator? That’s a major one.

The key is to analyze each decision carefully:
Will this risk move you closer to your goals? Or could it create harm—for yourself or others?

When a Risk Becomes Too Costly

Some risks are simply too expensive—emotionally, financially, or relationally. A financial gamble that jeopardizes your family’s security, for example, may not be worth the cost.

Before making a big decision, take the time to evaluate all possible outcomes. What’s the best-case scenario? What’s the worst? And, most importantly, can you live with the worst if it happens?

Thoughtful analysis doesn’t eliminate risk, but it helps ensure that your choices are intentional rather than impulsive.

Growth Lives Outside the Comfort Zone

Taking the right risks at the right time often leads to the greatest rewards. Growth doesn’t happen inside your comfort zone—it happens when you stretch beyond it.

Those who achieve more aren’t necessarily luckier or more talented; they’re willing to act despite uncertainty. They understand that discomfort is part of development.

Think about it: what risks have brought you to where you are today? And what new risks could help you take the next step forward?

Questions to Reflect On

  • Can you distinguish between a major and a minor risk?

  • Could the risk you’re considering harm you—or others around you?

  • What past risks have helped you advance your goals?

Final Thoughts

Every decision we make carries some degree of risk. The real challenge is choosing the ones that align with our values, growth goals, and purpose.

Avoiding all risk might feel safe, but in truth, it’s one of the riskiest choices we can make. Staying still means missing out on the opportunities that shape who we become.

So, as you reflect on your goals, ask yourself: What’s one risk I need to take to keep growing?

Take it—wisely, but bravely.
And remember, progress always begins where comfort ends. I hope you enjoyed the new format? I took a risk myself, and used ChatGPT as a resource for this post.

Have an awesome week—and take that next step toward your growth.

Steve Bucks

My name is Steve Bucks, and my passion for personal growth and development has been the driving force throughout my life and career. My journey began as a student who faced significant academic challenges—nothing came easily. However, my determination and perseverance sparked a lifelong commitment to learning, improvement, and helping others do the same.

Naturally, this path led me into education. I became a teacher to support students who, like me, found school difficult to navigate. My teaching career began in Texas and continued in Minnesota, where I spent the majority of my years in the classroom and raised my family. Eventually, my desire to make a broader impact led me into school administration. I began serving as an administrator in South Dakota in 2016 and transitioned to Montana in 2023.

With nearly 30 years of experience in public education, I've witnessed many changes—but one constant has been my passion for growth, both personally and professionally. In 2022, I became a Certified Coach and Speaker with the Maxwell Leadership Team, a journey I’ve continued into 2024 and 2025.

Through coaching and leading Mastermind groups, I’ve expanded my reach, helping individuals and teams unlock their potential and move forward with clarity and confidence.

Are you at a crossroads or feeling stuck in an area of your life? If so, I’d love to explore how I can support your journey.
