Death by Doubt

Am I enough, and will my experiences help me reach my highest potential?

Self-doubt is one of the fastest ways to derail your personal growth. It creeps in quietly, but its impact can be devastating. As a coach, and as someone who has walked this path myself, I’ve learned that we must consistently remind ourselves of a simple truth: we are each uniquely equipped for the purpose we’re meant to fulfill. Our experiences, values, and beliefs aren’t accidents—they’re assets. They shape who we are and prepare us for what’s ahead. Often, the doubt we feel comes from not yet seeing that purpose clearly. We’re working hard, staying committed to our goals, and pushing toward something bigger… yet the clarity still escapes us. When that happens, the instinct is to question ourselves. Keep moving. Keep showing up. Keep doing the work. And for the love of your future self—stop doubting the value you bring to this world.

The Trap of Comparison: Comparison has always been one of the biggest sources of doubt in my own life. When I see others doing more, achieving more, or living the life I envision, I sometimes feel less-than. Many of us experience this—far more than we admit. But here’s what we forget: We see their highlight reel, not their process. We don’t see the detours, late nights, doubts, failures, or the internal battles they fought to get where they are. They struggled just as we struggle. They questioned themselves just as we do. You can get there too. I will get there too. Comparison doesn’t define your path—it only distracts from it. The work you’re doing, consistently and silently, is what ultimately silences doubt.

Your Inner Voice Matters: Even our wins can create doubt when we only focus on the areas where we “need to improve.” I recently received an extremely positive evaluation at work, yet my mind immediately locked onto the feedback about growth opportunities. That’s common for those committed to development—we fixate on what needs to be better rather than appreciating what’s already strong. Growth is vital, but internal narratives that highlight only our shortcomings destroy confidence. We must learn to celebrate progress with the same energy we devote to improvement.

The Weight of Perfectionism: High standards and ambition are powerful motivators—until they become heavy enough to suffocate momentum. The “I need to be more” mindset can build and build until we drown in the belief that we’re not enough. But here’s the truth: No one is asking you to be perfect. Focus on doing the small things with intention. Those healthy routines—done consistently—shape who you become more than perfection ever will. Your best effort, not flawless execution, is what drives transformation.

  • Who are you comparing yourself to, and how is it impacting your confidence?

  • Is your internal voice supporting your growth or fueling your doubt?

  • How have your own expectations created pressure or uncertainty?

Doubt kills dreams long before failure ever does. It’s held me back more times than I’d like to admit. That’s why I’m passionate about helping others navigate it—because I’m constantly working through it myself. And that’s okay. Growth is a journey, not a destination. If you’re ready to explore the doubts standing between you and your goals, I’d love to walk that journey with you. You deserve to see your potential clearly—and believe in it fully. Have a great week.

Steve Bucks

My name is Steve Bucks, and my passion for personal growth and development has been the driving force throughout my life and career. My journey began as a student who faced significant academic challenges—nothing came easily. However, my determination and perseverance sparked a lifelong commitment to learning, improvement, and helping others do the same.

Naturally, this path led me into education. I became a teacher to support students who, like me, found school difficult to navigate. My teaching career began in Texas and continued in Minnesota, where I spent the majority of my years in the classroom and raised my family. Eventually, my desire to make a broader impact led me into school administration. I began serving as an administrator in South Dakota in 2016 and transitioned to Montana in 2023.

With nearly 30 years of experience in public education, I've witnessed many changes—but one constant has been my passion for growth, both personally and professionally. In 2022, I became a Certified Coach and Speaker with the Maxwell Leadership Team, a journey I’ve continued into 2024 and 2025.

Through coaching and leading Mastermind groups, I’ve expanded my reach, helping individuals and teams unlock their potential and move forward with clarity and confidence.

Are you at a crossroads or feeling stuck in an area of your life? If so, I’d love to explore how I can support your journey.
