Someday Is Stealing Today

What can we learn from loss, or from postponing what matters most?

I’ve been struggling to find the words to articulate how I feel in this moment of life. A few weeks ago, our family experienced the loss of someone very special to us and to the community where they lived. It pains me to see my family struggle with the loss of such a positive light and joyful human being.

This experience served as a reminder to me: don’t postpone visiting loved ones and others we care deeply about.

There is no doubt that life gets busy. We quickly lose contact because of life decisions, changes, and redirections. One thing I learned from seeing distant relatives over the past few weeks is that family connections can be forever. We often pick up with one another as if we never left.

I hope this post offers some guidance and perspective on what matters most in life.

Physical presence with the ones we love is so important. When we are apart, texting and phone calls can fill a void and allow us to stay connected. But they aren't the same as spending quality time with those who matter most.

Make the visit while they're here. Have experiences that build memories.

Sure, there will be those who are too busy or unwilling to spend that time together, but don't give up. Keep asking. Keep trying to make connections that matter.

Life is too short to be absent from someone's life because of hurt feelings over something you or they did or said. Let go of past hurts and disagreements, because anger often hurts us the most. It can pollute our hearts and minds.

Be the bigger person and apologize first, if necessary.

We get nowhere if both sides of an issue refuse to change or correct it. Someone has to be willing to take the first step. Yes, you may be met with refusal or silence. Don't let that discourage you from making the positive changes necessary in your own life.

Life keeps moving regardless of what happens.

I was listening to a book recently where the author referred to the rearview mirror and windshield of our cars. The rearview mirror is smaller for a reason, while the windshield is much bigger so we can clearly see where we're headed.

We must learn to let go of what was and look toward the future so we can continue moving forward.

I acknowledge this is easier said than done.

But please don't miss this coaching point: We will never grow and make positive changes in our lives if we continue to focus solely on past issues.

I have a quote on my desk that has helped me on many occasions:

Let go, Let God!

I'm not sure where it originates, but its message is powerful.

Who do you need to connect with today?

What pain or disagreement do you need to let go of and seek forgiveness for?

What must you do today to positively move forward in your life?

Life is so much richer when we are able to connect with those we love. Unfortunately, life sometimes gets in the way. Loved ones lose touch, have disagreements, or leave us unexpectedly.

Please take this lesson seriously: family is everything. And if you don't have family nearby, connect with a close friend.

Stop letting someday interfere with today.

Reach out to those who matter in your life and be willing to be that person for someone else.

Steve Bucks

My name is Steve Bucks, and my passion for personal growth and development has been the driving force throughout my life and career. My journey began as a student who faced significant academic challenges—nothing came easily. However, my determination and perseverance sparked a lifelong commitment to learning, improvement, and helping others do the same.

Naturally, this path led me into education. I became a teacher to support students who, like me, found school difficult to navigate. My teaching career began in Texas and continued in Minnesota, where I spent the majority of my years in the classroom and raised my family. Eventually, my desire to make a broader impact led me into school administration. I began serving as an administrator in South Dakota in 2016 and transitioned to Montana in 2023.

With nearly 30 years of experience in public education, I've witnessed many changes—but one constant has been my passion for growth, both personally and professionally. In 2022, I became a Certified Coach and Speaker with the Maxwell Leadership Team, a journey I’ve continued into 2024 and 2025.

Through coaching and leading Mastermind groups, I’ve expanded my reach, helping individuals and teams unlock their potential and move forward with clarity and confidence.

Are you at a crossroads or feeling stuck in an area of your life? If so, I’d love to explore how I can support your journey.
