Lean In
How do you face the unknown?
You don't need all the answers to move forward. Sometimes, you just need to lean in.
This week, I faced uncertainty while sharing our school district's situation with the community through local news outlets. I anticipated questions, but I couldn't predict exactly what would be asked or how things would unfold.
Leadership often puts us in these moments. We want to have the answers, appear confident, and know what comes next. But the reality is, we won't always have the answers when we want them.
That's okay. Give yourself some grace. Saying "I don't know" or "I need to look into that" isn't a weakness. It's an opportunity to pause, gather information, and move forward with intention.
Here are three ways to navigate the unknown:
Accept what you don't know.
Stop fighting the uncertainty. You can't control every outcome, and pretending you have all the answers won't change that. Accept where you are, give yourself grace, and focus on what you can control.
Stay calm and practice quiet strength.
When situations become emotional or you feel unprepared, resist the urge to react immediately. I call this quiet strength—the ability to pause, stay composed, and avoid matching the emotions of those around you.
Sometimes, the best move is to sit with the situation a little longer. You don't have to respond to everything at the moment.
When the path becomes clear, move forward with purpose.
Our school district faces difficult decisions, and we're waiting for the community's response. The next steps may bring challenges and tough conversations. Whatever happens, we must be ready to face them.
We can't spend our energy worrying about every possible outcome. We must remain steady, adapt to what comes, and meet the challenges head-on.
The same is true in your life and leadership. You may not know what's around the corner, but you can choose how you respond when it arrives.
Here's my coaching challenge for you:
Where are you facing uncertainty right now?
Can you remain composed without having all the answers?
When the path becomes clear, will you be ready to act?
Remember, you don't have to know how everything will unfold. Accept the unknown, stay steady, and move forward when the time comes.
Lean into the unknown. Your next opportunity may be waiting on the other side.
