Get Out of the Way!
Who’s really standing in the way of you reaching your goals and getting more out of life?
The other day, someone said something to me that instantly made my blood boil. I had a choice. I could replay it in my mind, allowing frustration to grow every time I thought about it, or I could let it go.
In a fraction of a second, I made a decision: Let it go. They’re wrong. Go enjoy your day.
That is exactly what I did.
One of the greatest obstacles to our growth is often ourselves. I am no different than anyone else. Maintaining daily growth habits is a constant challenge. I stumble. I fail to follow through. I occasionally allow a poor mindset to take hold. More often than not, I am my own biggest roadblock.
The first step toward growth is recognizing when we are falling short of our own expectations. What is our mindset when we become frustrated? Are we following through on the commitments we make to ourselves? We cannot change what we refuse to acknowledge.
Growth requires humility. It requires the willingness to honestly assess ourselves and hold ourselves to a high standard. While that level of self-reflection may create some discomfort, personal development depends on our ability to identify where we are getting in our own way. The first hurdle is recognizing it.
Understanding what motivates us is equally important. I have had the opportunity to attend the Maxwell Leadership Conference three times, and each experience has energized and challenged me. Conferences like these, along with other growth-focused events, motivate me to become better.
When we surround ourselves with inspiring experiences and like-minded people, we create momentum. The challenge, however, is maintaining that momentum. We leave these events energized, excited, and ready to take on the world, only to find that the motivation slowly fades as the realities of daily life return.
That is why action matters.
Once we recognize where we are falling short and understand what fuels our motivation, we must take intentional action. Action is what transforms growth from an idea into reality. It is the bridge between where we are today and where we want to be tomorrow.
One strategy that has helped me is scheduling a few key growth activities into each day. This creates direction and accountability. And if you're someone who enjoys checking items off a list, there is real satisfaction in seeing evidence that you followed through on your commitments.
Consider these questions:
Do you recognize when your thoughts or actions fall short of your expectations?
What motivates you to stay the course and continue growing?
What action will you take today that moves you one step closer to your goals?
Growth happens when we are willing to confront our lack of follow-through, our excuses, and our attitudes. That awareness is the first major hurdle. Once we clarify it, we can identify what motivates us and develop strategies to sustain that motivation over time.
With the right mindset, consistent energy, and intentional action, we can accomplish far more than we once thought possible.
Have a great week discovering more about yourself and your potential.
