Creating Excitement
What movement have you made to advance your growth?
I must admit, I am a chronic procrastinator.
Last week, I was working on some coaching packages for clients. These will be three one-on-one coaching offers. Like many things I do, I have great ideas, and I get super excited about what they could become. Then I pause. I put the project down to take care of something else, file it away in a folder for later, and sometimes never look at it again.
Those coaching opportunities are still waiting for my attention.
Granted, this is a step I have been putting off for some time. But last week, I moved forward. I began making real progress in an area that matters to me. That movement caused me to stop and ask myself a simple question:
What am I offering, and shouldn't I be excited about it?
That question made me think about how we approach the goals we say are important to us.
Start With the End in Mind
Assess your needs by asking yourself what you are trying to achieve. What is the goal?
Like we do in education, work backward. What do you want the end product to look like? What are you trying to accomplish? What would success look like at the end of a specific period of time?
The end result needs to be clear.
For me, I have fallen short when it comes to getting a finished product or coaching offer in front of potential clients. It is something I have been working on, and something I continue to work on.
What am I offering?
As a coach, I want you to have that final product or result clear in your mind. Once you know where you are going, you can begin identifying what you need to get there.
Clarity creates direction. Direction creates movement.
Create Your Space
Find a space where you can create, think, and work on your goals.
This is more important than we sometimes realize. It might be a home office, a quiet room, or a table at your local coffee shop. Wherever it is, create a space where distractions are limited and your creative energy can take over.
And don't overlook when you are most productive.
When are you most creative? Are you more focused in the morning? Late at night? Do you need quiet music, or movement around you?
Knowing the environment and conditions that help you do your best work is part of knowing yourself.
We move closer to our goals when we intentionally create the conditions that support them. It may take some experimenting to find the right combination of space, time, and energy.
Give yourself some flexibility as you figure it out.
Protect the Excitement
The hardest part of chasing a goal or creating something meaningful may be maintaining the excitement.
This is where I have struggled in the past.
We all have busy schedules. People need our attention. Other responsibilities compete for our time. Other projects seem more urgent.
That is reality.
But if something matters to you, you have to find a way to keep it in front of you.
Excitement creates energy. Energy creates action. And action creates momentum.
If you continually lose your connection to the reason you started, it becomes much easier to put the goal aside and tell yourself you'll get back to it later.
I've done that.
Maybe you have too.
We need to protect the things we are excited about. Not because every day will be exciting, but because the vision of what we are working toward needs to remain important enough to keep us moving.
It is a struggle. No doubt.
But growth rarely happens when we simply think about what we want. Growth happens when we create movement toward it.
So, What About You?
What do you need to move your goals and yourself forward?
Where and when are you most creative?
How do you keep your goals in the forefront of your life and remain excited about achieving them?
I am no better than anyone else. I coach because I understand how quickly we can fall short of achieving the goals we set for ourselves. I struggle with many of the same things I coach others through.
That's important to me.
I'm not standing on the sidelines telling you how easy this is. I'm in the work too.
With the right resources, the right environment, intentional time, and a reason that keeps you excited, you can create the momentum necessary to move toward the goals you're working on.
I'm working on the same things.
So, be watching for those coaching packages in the near future.
