Certainly, Uncertain

How are you growing in a season of uncertainty?

It’s graduation season—a time filled with excitement, anticipation, and, for many, a fair amount of uncertainty. It’s one of my favorite times of the year. I genuinely enjoy standing in front of our graduating seniors, sharing a few final thoughts before they step into the next chapter of their lives.

Now, I can’t guarantee they’re all listening—but I always hope something I say resonates with at least one student.

This season also invites reflection. As I reflect, I’m reminded of something important: growth doesn’t always come from clarity. In fact, some of our greatest growth happens in uncertain moments.

Let’s explore a few ideas that can help us navigate—and even thrive—in those seasons.

Direction Over Certainty

We often believe we need everything figured out before we take action. But the truth is, direction matters far more than certainty.

When you have a sense of direction—even if it’s not perfect—you can begin moving, and movement creates clarity.

You’ve likely heard of the compounding effect: small, consistent actions build over time. Each step forward reveals new insights, new opportunities, and sometimes, necessary adjustments. That’s part of the process.

Confidence doesn’t come from having all the answers—it comes from taking action.

Perfection isn’t the goal. Progress is.

Curiosity Fuels Growth

Uncertainty often feels uncomfortable, but what if we reframed it?

What if uncertainty isn’t something to fear—but something to explore?

When we choose curiosity over fear, we unlock possibility.

Uncertainty creates space. Space to think differently. Space to discover. Space to grow.

Instead of asking, “What if this goes wrong?”
Try asking, “What else could this become?”

Curiosity keeps you open. It keeps you learning. Most importantly, it keeps you moving forward.

Not knowing isn’t a weakness—it’s an opportunity.

Failure Is Feedback

If we’re serious about growth, we have to change how we view failure.

Failure is not final. It’s not your identity. It’s information.

Every misstep teaches you something—about your approach, your mindset, your habits, or your direction. When you reflect on those lessons, you evolve.

And that ability to adapt? That’s a superpower.

We need to let go of the idea that we must “lock in” one perfect path. Life doesn’t work that way. Growth requires flexibility.

Fail. Learn. Adjust. Keep going.

A Few Questions to Reflect On

  • Do I have a clear direction—and am I actively moving toward it?

  • What excites me about my goals? Am I staying curious about new possibilities?

  • What have my recent failures taught me—and how can I adjust moving forward?

Final Thought

We don’t need certainty to move forward—we need direction.

Everything doesn’t have to be perfect. It just needs to be in motion.

Growth happens when we pursue something meaningful, stay curious in the process, and learn from the inevitable mistakes along the way.

So, wherever you are right now—whether you’re stepping into something new or navigating the unknown—keep moving.

There’s growth waiting for you in the uncertainty.

If I can support you on that journey, don’t hesitate to reach out.

Steve Bucks

My name is Steve Bucks, and my passion for personal growth and development has been the driving force throughout my life and career. My journey began as a student who faced significant academic challenges—nothing came easily. However, my determination and perseverance sparked a lifelong commitment to learning, improvement, and helping others do the same.

Naturally, this path led me into education. I became a teacher to support students who, like me, found school difficult to navigate. My teaching career began in Texas and continued in Minnesota, where I spent the majority of my years in the classroom and raised my family. Eventually, my desire to make a broader impact led me into school administration. I began serving as an administrator in South Dakota in 2016 and transitioned to Montana in 2023.

With nearly 30 years of experience in public education, I've witnessed many changes—but one constant has been my passion for growth, both personally and professionally. In 2022, I became a Certified Coach and Speaker with the Maxwell Leadership Team, a journey I’ve continued into 2024 and 2025.

Through coaching and leading Mastermind groups, I’ve expanded my reach, helping individuals and teams unlock their potential and move forward with clarity and confidence.

Are you at a crossroads or feeling stuck in an area of your life? If so, I’d love to explore how I can support your journey.
